about us

Formed in 2015, Somerset Woodworks is a small, family-run firm based in Mallorytown, Ontario. The owner is Jim Stinson.

Jim’s father instilled the love of woodworking in him at a young age. Through high school and early adulthood, he was blessed with mentors who fostered a further devotion to the craft.

Jim graduated from the Heritage Carpentry and Joinery program at the Algonquin College Heritage Institute in Perth, Ontario. He enjoyed a teaching position within that program for over a decade. In 2018 and 2023, the school’s Students’ Association honoured him with the “Excellence in Teaching” award.  Jim is the co-author of the textbook, “Carpentry: A Technical Workbook for Trades’ Mathematics”, published by Pearson.

The Somerset Woodworks team includes Jim's wife, Allison, their two children, and their dog, Murdoch.
